Shotton and the Deeside communities
Shotton adjoins Connah's Quay on the Dee and is closely tied to the steelworks that has shaped this stretch of the estuary for over a century. Higher Shotton, Garden City, Sandycroft and Queensferry sit around it, all within the wider Deeside area.
Comparing gold buyers sensibly
Advertised rates are the least reliable way to choose. Two buyers quoting a similar price per gram can pay noticeably different amounts, because the rate is applied to a weight and a purity that the buyer determines. If a mixed lot is weighed as one and treated at the lowest standard present, a headline figure means nothing.
The questions worth asking are about method: how purity is established, whether you can watch the weighing, whether standards are separated, and how long the figure holds given that gold moves continuously. Questions to ask a gold buyer sets out the full list.
Why the headline price is never the whole picture
The wholesale gold price applies to certified fine gold in standard bar form. Scrap jewellery has to be sorted and refined before it reaches that market, and the buyer carries the price risk in the meantime. That gap is normal and explainable — spot price versus what a gold buyer pays explains what sits in it.
Gold as a store of value
In parts of the world gold jewellery is bought partly as savings, and pieces from those traditions turn up regularly in this area. They are usually 22ct and marked 916, sold originally by weight with a making charge on top. That high gold content is why accurate weighing matters more on these items than on lighter British 9ct.
