Sorting before a valuation
The single most useful thing you can do is separate items by their fineness mark. A 750 ring weighed in with a pile of 375 chain risks being valued at the lower standard, and no reputable buyer wants that either. Ten minutes with a magnifying glass usually sorts it — see what does 375 mean on gold.
Plated items
Marks such as GP, GF, RGP and HGE indicate plated or rolled gold rather than solid, and these are not bought as scrap gold. The marks separate them from solid pieces quickly, and you will be told which is which.
